SoftFIRE First Open Call

Results

The first SoftFIRE Open Call closed on September 20th, 2016 at 17.00 Brussels Time.

The SoftFIRE project received 26 (eligible proposals) of which

  • 9 proposals addressed Objective 1
  • 8 proposals addressed Objective 2
  • 9 project both Objectives

Proposers came 50% from academia (Universities and Research Institutes) and 50% from enterprises (SMEs, industry) originating from following countries (in alphabetical order): Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom

The total requested funding was EUR 1.262.457, an oversubscription factor of 2.5.

Although the quality of most proposals was good to very good, during the thorough evaluation process only 6 proposals surpassed the threshold in all criteria and were therefore selected:

Objective 1

National Center of Scientific Research “Demokritos” (GR): Extension of the Federated Platform with NFV/SDN-compatible Emulator of Satellite Communication systems

Politecnico di Torino, Dept. of Computer and Control Engineering (IT): Network Functions Virtualization at the Edge of the Network

University of Nis, Faculty of Electronic Engineering (Serbia): SEmantics driven Code GENEration for 5G networking experimentation

Objective 2

Fujitsu Labs of Europe (UK): A real-time edge tracking service for video analytics-based applications

Level7 s.r.l.u (IT): Managing Attacks from Remote Sources

Objectives 1 and 2:

Gridnet S.A. (GR): Softfire OffLoadIng

General Information and Call Objectives

The first Open Call of the SoftFIRE project focusses on interworking and interoperability in order to assess the effort of the federated testbeds in creating a single environment for experimentation. It will be complemented by an InterOpTest, in which the Project Partners and few other invited third parties will show the results achieved so far. This will also offer the opportunity to interested third parties to familiarise with the platform in order to understand its current functions and how to use them to develop applications and services.

The proposed work plan should address at least one or more of the following objectives:

  • OBJECTIVE 1 the development and validation of extensions to the current federated testbed or of new functionalities thereof. For example
    • testbed enhancements in terms of orchestration, control or virtualization capabilities and their real world evaluation over the federated infrastructure
    • architectures extensions based on NFV/SDN or new functionalities, complying with the 5G notion.
    • Experiments enabling benchmarking of the NFV/SDN components used in SoftFIRE.
    • Extensions to SoftFIRE infrastructure by using open source SDN/NFV components, interoperable with the existing FIRE control and management tools adopted by SoftFIRE.
  • OBJECTIVE 2 the production and/or validation of new services, systems and applications that benefit of network programmability and NFV and SDN technologies more generally.

The SoftFIRE project is now ready to receive proposals for experiments to be carried out on the Federated Testbed. For this purpose, the SoftFIRE Project invites interested parties in submitting experiment proposals that address Objective 1 or Objective 2. SoftFIRE is also open to evaluate proposals that do address other topics in the realm of applications of NFV/SDN (e.g., 5G and beyond).
